Meet Ryan

A resident of Mesa since the 2nd grade, Ryan’s years of service to the community and love of working with small businesses and neighborhoods have made him the connecter Mesa needs.


  • 1986

    Moved to Mesa

    Enjoyed a happy childhood of bike riding, fishing for crawdads in the canal, building forts in the mesquites, playing street hockey in the cul-de-sac and skateboarding—all while getting home by the time the lights came on.

  • 1995

    Bought First Car

    Ryan bought his first car for $400 after mowing many lawns and working at Pistol Pete’s Pizza and Cinnabon

  • 1997

    Graduated High School

    Graduated from Westwood High in Mesa!

  • 2008

    Attended Mesa Community College

    Attended Mesa Community College and volunteered over 500 hours in the Rose Garden and Habitat for Humanity Re-Store, earning the Excellence in Service Award through Americorps

  • 2012

    Graduated Arizona State University

    Bachelor of Arts in Sustainable Urban Dynamics from Arizona State University, Bachelor of Sciences in Urban Planning from Arizona State University.

    Co-founded Mesa Urban Garden

    Co-founded Mesa Urban Garden, the first city-sponsored urban garden project in Mesa! Mesa Urban Garden provides fresh produce directly to the community and local food banks.

    Co-founded RAILmesa

    Co-founded RAILmesa, a registered neighborhood group that advocates for increased citizen participation, responsible development of housing, transit options and the creation of quality jobs along Mesa’s Light Rail Corridor.

    Founded Innovative Urban Solutions, LLC

    A consulting firm focused on cross-sector community development.

    University of New Hampshire

    Certificate of Community Development Finance from the University of New Hampshire.

    Married Erika Godinez Varela.

    Appointed to the Advisory Board of ABAKA Childcare Foundation, a complete Filipino language immersion program for children in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
